NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla (WFLA) — Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is sending a strong message after he investigators say a man tried to set fire to the home of one of his deputies.
“Our deputies and their family members are going to be trained on how to protect themselves. If that means using deadly force, so be it… When you’re coming to our house where our kids are our families are that’s when you’ve unfortunately stepped it up a level,” said Nocco.
Daniel Thomas Hall was arrested Thursday morning on the lawn of Deputy Ryan Lennox. Lennox told investigators he woke up to a knock on his door and found Hall on his patio trying to put out a small fire.
“It was an absolute blessing that deputy Lennox’s sprinkler system had gone off,” said Nocco about why the fire didn’t spread.
Deputy Lennox and his wife, children, and K9 partner Jango were all inside the home at the time of the attack. Sheriff Nocco tells News Channel 8 that Lennox’s home was targeted when Hall saw Lennox’s take-home vehicle in the driveway.
“As he is going down the street, he sees Deputy Lennox’s vehicle and he automatically realizes that’s a marked Pasco Sheriff’s vehicle. He goes up to the vehicle and he actually puts his fingertips on the windshield, on the windows around the vehicle,” said Nocco.
Neighbors expressed their concerns.
“You know what? I don’t think they should have their cruisers parked in front of their homes, because that targets them,” said Jocye Bila, who is one of Hall’s neighbors.
“Nobody in uniform gets respect nowadays,” said Bila.
Charles Nicholson, who knows Hall’s family, is thankful Hall wasn’t shot by the deputy.
“I know he has a lot of mental disabilities, mental problems. I don’t understand why he did what he did but I hope he gets the help,” said Nicholson.MORE TOP-CLICKED NEWS:
