Tampa Bay hospitals receive safety grades; check the list

Local News

It's not rare to hear of infections developing after a procedure or a surgical instrument left in a patient, and Tampa Bay hospitals are no exception to those types of incidents.

Leapfrog Group, an independent Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization that focuses on transparency in the country's health care system, examines hospital records across the United States to allow consumers to see how frequent errors, injuries, accidents and infections are.

According to the organization, as many as 440,000 people die every year from hospital errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

The nonprofit organization evaluated more than 2,600 hospitals and graded them based on preventable errors. Across the country, 32 percent of hospitals earned an “A,” 26 percent earned a “B,” 36 percent earned a “C,” 6 percent a “D” and less than 1 of surveyed hospitals percent earned an “F."

Fortunately, none of the Bay area hospitals received a grade lower than a "C."

However, some of the most popular local hospitals did not get the make the grade.

Tampa General Hospital received a "C" for the second consecutive year, largely in part to its number of deaths from a treatable complication such as a heart attack or pneumonia. TGH also had a low score for effective leadership to prevent errors.

Every Bay area AdventHealth hospital received an "A" grade in the evaluation. After rebranding its 47 hospitals from Adventist Health System to AdventHealth in the fall of 2018, the AdventHealth system's slogan of  "feel whole," is more than just talk. AdventHealth Tampa specifically earned above-average scores for its nursing staff and their communication.
