The CDC reports suicide rates are up 25 percent nationwide since 1999. It’s affecting people worldwide and in the Tampa Bay area. Local YouTube sensation, La Guardia Cross has a couple hundred thousand followers and he’s using his story and his platform to shed light on the matter.
La Guardia Cross has known his wife Leah since high school and they’ve been married for twelve years. Two weeks ago, he panicked when his wife was in a deep, dark place that he couldn’t pull her out of.
“Even without her giving me the details of how she was going to end things, it’s just how she was talking about it and what she was saying that she wanted to happen after she was gone. It was just, there was nothing else to say, there were no more words or like, I knew what had to be done at that point,” said Cross.
Three years ago La Guardia started a YouTube channel when his first daughter was born. On his channel called “New Father Chronicles” La Guardia jokes around that he doesn’t really have the whole parenting thing figured out and a couple hundred thousand people relate to him.
His videos about life and parenting are captivating and while he had everyone’s attention, he stopped sharing the funny parts of his life and shared a painful one.
“I’ve been trying to record this a few times, trying to find the right things to say but basically I really came close to losing my life last week and it’s not something you ever want to come close to. An incredibly popular word I hear from my wife is burden. The word burden is often used because she has felt like many times to ask for help or even need help is a burden on me and everyone who loves her and that is so far from the truth,” said Cross.
The point of his YouTube video is to let you know that if you or someone you know is in a deep dark place, help is out there and there is hope.
Leah Cross is now getting the help she needs.
