TERRA CEIA, Fla. (WFLA) - A homeowner looking through mangroves behind his Manatee County home came across a pipe full of explosives on Saturday evening.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, the homeowner removed a large PVC pipe behind his home on Horseshoe Loop in Terra Ceia around 6 p.m.
Deputies say the pipe was capped on both ends, so the man opened portions of it with a chainsaw. Once it was open, the man found smaller cylinders inside containing a brownish powder. He then called the sheriff's office to let them know.
The sheriff's office and a HAZMAT team responded and determined the pipe had explosives inside. A bomb squad took the pipe to a nearby farm off Buckeye Road so they could safely detonate the explosive. The blasts happened early Sunday morning.
Deputies believe the pipe and explosives may have been used years ago when forming the channels around Terra Ceia Bay.
