MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Nearly a decade after her 4-year-old daughter’s death, a Manatee County mother has been charged with murder, authorities said.
Kelis Rucker was found dead at a home in Bradenton on Aug. 14, 2009. An autopsy revealed the young girl died of asphyxiation.
Her mother, Dominique Brewer was the only person in the house when paramedics arrived to find the child deceased, detectives said.
Investigators said Brewer gave “several inconsistent statements” during the initial interviews and “no viable explanation” for the child’s injuries. She also admitted to using drugs before they arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.
After the initial investigation, Brewer was not arrested. The case was sent to the State Attorney’s Office and went cold.
Detectives began to re-examine the case in 2017 and narrowed in on Brewer as the suspect. They met with prosecutors and reached a decision earlier this month to charge Brewer with homicide.
Brewer was re-interviewed on Monday, then arrested and charged with murder.
