MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A driver was killed in an apparent road rage incident in Manatee County on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The shooting occurred on Buckeye Road near U.S. 301 at about 5:15 p.m.
Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells said the shooter told deputies he was traveling westbound on the roadway when a truck that was traveling in the opposite direction swerved into his lane and almost ran into his truck. He said he got off of the road and turned around to get the driver’s tag number.
Investigators said the other driver circled back around and pulled beside the shooter and both drivers exchanged words. Then the victim got out of his truck and leaned into the other driver’s window, which was open.
The shooter told the other driver to back away and brandished a gun. The other driver pulled out his own gun and leveled it at the shooter, detectives said.
The shooter said he was in fear for his life, so he fired at the other driver, killing him.
Then he retreated to the east side of U.S. 301, where he called 911 and told dispatchers that he had just shot someone. He is cooperating with the investigation.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wells said investigators determined that both men had guns.
“Both drivers were alone in their vehicles, so really it’s the driver of the other vehicle that has given us all of the information and the only one at this point that has any information to give,” said Wells, adding that there were no witnesses in the area.
Officials said Buckeye Road will be closed from Carter Road to U.S. 301. until an investigation is complete.
Further information, including the drivers’ names, was not immediately available.
