Man arrested in connection with 2017 Citrus County murder where remains found in trash can

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A man was arrested in connection with a 2017 murder where the victim’s remains were found in a trash can on Thursday. 

According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, Ryan McClellan, 33, was reported missing on Sept. 20, 2017.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office Major Crimes Section began investigating, but could not find McClellan. 

He was last seen alive by family members five days prior.

His Jeep was located off South Applebud Terrace in Homosassa on Sept. 27.

Detectives uncovered large withdrawals from McClellan’s bank account by suspect Emery Whitt, 26.

Whitt was located and arrested on unrelated charges and interviewed about McClellan’s disappearance.

Personal items of McClellan’s, including several guns, were found in Whitt’s possession.

Human remains were found by a deputy on Nov. 25, 2017 in a trashcan on a vacant, wooded lot off South American Avocet Point in Lecanto.

The remains were confirmed to be McClellan.

Examiners were able to determine he was the victim of a violent homicide.

After connecting leads, gathering forensic evidence and communicating with the State Attorney’s Office, the sheriff’s office can announce that Whitt was arrested in connection with McClellan’s murder.
