HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Kids at a Hernando County elementary school are on a mission to build a new playground.

Students at Chocachatti Elementary in Spring Hill made a video with the hope of convincing school officials and community members to donate to the cause.

The school’s staff and students hope to raise $150,000 for the playground. So far, they’ve raised about $30,000.

Assistant Principal Sarah Trowell is helping to organize the fundraiser which is called Project Playground.

“Currently, at Chocachatti, we have amazing things going on that ensure brains are growing and healthy eating is learned and practiced, but physical exercise is an area that the school would like to improve on for our students, because they deserve it,” said teacher Sarah Trowell about the project. “We have NO playground at all for our 1-5 students, and the small one we have for kindergarten is old and doesn’t accommodate all of the kindergarten students.”

Trowell says providing students with playground equipment is imperative because a new law requires students to have 150 minutes of physical activity a week.
