The Florida Aquarium is mourning the loss of a beloved shark.
A 19-year-old female sand tiger shark, who was not named, died Sunday afternoon, the aquarium said in a statement. The shark had been monitored for chronic health issues over the last couple years and was showing signs of decline over the last few days.
“Our female sand tiger shark contributed significantly to our shark conservation research and served as an animal ambassador for her species. She will be missed.”
It’s unclear if an autopsy will be conducted to determine her cause of death.
