ARCADIA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 4-year-old girl has died and another girl has injuries after an SUV plowed through a playground at a DeSoto County day care and hit them, a Florida Highway Patrol report said.

According to the report, the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the Imagination Station Learning Center on E. Magnolia Street in Arcadia.

The Highway Patrol said the driver went off the road and hit a sign and went through a fence surrounding the playground where two girls, ages 4 and 5, were playing. The SUV hit a post and some playground equipment, and in doing so, collided with the girls. Then it hit a tree.

The 4-year-old, identified as Maleena Faith Valdez, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

Maleena’s grandmother told WFLA she was a very happy little girl.

“Oh my God, I miss her so much,” Josephine Valdez said. “This shouldn’t have even happened but it did. Only God knows why. All she was doing was playing in the playground, being a little girl like all the other children. But why this tragedy – why?”

News Channel 8 learned the 5-year-old who was hit suffered a broken arm, but is expected to be okay.

Maleena’s family told WFLA her sister Jazziah was on the playground when the crash happened, and heard a loud boom, but did not see the children get hit. The 8-year-old Jazziah told WFLA it was hard to see her sister suffering, and said she’s praying for the little girl who was injured.

The driver, identified by troopers as 18-year-old Kiara Rishelle Morant, was treated for minor injuries immediately after the crash. She was then arrested and charged with driving without a license. She has since been released on $120 bond, according to online jail records.

“Right now, we do have an inexperienced driver who is behind the wheel. This person did not have a valid Florida drivers license,” FHP Trooper Kenn Watson said.

The trooper added the driver, “flat-out should not have been behind the wheel” at the time of the crash.

“You can only imagine the pandemonium that was occurring for all of this happening within seconds,” he said. “And actually having struck two children is just something that is unfathomable.”

Additional charges could be pending against Morant after the child’s death. Maleena’s family just wants justice.

“We are going to fight until the end and it is going to be for Maleena Faith Valdez,” the girl’s grandmother said. “Our baby gained her wings.”
