Community groups to hold ‘Speak-Out’ against Sarasota Police Department

Local News

Several local groups are coming together to demand answers after they say two men were almost killed by Sarasota police.

On Wednesday, Answer Coalition, Black Lives Matter Manasota, Rodney Mitchell Foundation and the community will demand justice for Chad Washington and Jeremy Trebbles.

In March, witnesses say Chad Washington was suffering from a medical condition. When officers arrived, they tazed him several times. The police chief says Washington was on drugs and an internal investigation found officers did nothing wrong.

In April, Jeremy Trebbles Jr., was shot. The 18-year-old is accused of running over an officer’s foot with his car. Trebbles and the passenger in the car were both shot and had non-life-threatening injuries. The officer who fired the shots is Officer Brandon Vermillion.

The groups will be speaking out against what they are calling police brutality. They are demanding that charges against Chad Washington and Jeremy Trebbles be dropped. They also want Officer Brandon Vermillion fired and prosecuted.
