The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a fisherman who vanished in the Gulf of Mexico early Thursday morning.

Dennis Grim, 63, went missing after a boat that left from Seminole sank 70 miles southwest of Fort Myers Beach.

Around 4 a.m. Thursday morning, the Coast Guard received a distress call from the captain aboard the 37-foot vessel.  A helicopter crew came to the scene and found three passengers clinging to life jackets and debris.  The men reported Grim missing from their party.  Officials said the boaters suffered from symptoms of hypothermia.

After 39 hours of searching, the Coast Guard had not found the missing boater.  Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, the search was suspended.

“Anytime we have to suspend a search, especially when we couldn’t bring everyone home safe, it is the most difficult decision I have to make,” said Cmdr. Randall Brown, Sector St. Petersburg’s deputy commander. “Our thoughts go out to all those that knew Mr. Grim.”
