While the players practiced around the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday morning, cheerleaders and band members decided to participate in a friendly competition inside the Feeding Tampa Bay headquarters.
The students from the University of Oregon and the students from the University of Notre Dame dove into boxes and boxes of food on Wednesday morning. They checked the expiration dates, they sorted the contents and they repackaged the food.
“My favorite part about this is just being able to give back, you know? We get so many opportunities because people give to us and it is so nice to give back to other people who definitely need it,” said Derek Massey, a cheerleader at the University of Notre Dame.
“Traveling all the way out here and making a difference across the country feels like it is a pretty big deal, so it is a good time,” said Polina Aguilar, a cheerleader at the University of Oregon.
The Ducks won the competition by packing 8,284 meals.
The Fighting Irish fell behind by 130 meals, but they still managed to pack 8,154 meals.
Together, the two schools packed 16,438 meals for the Tampa community.
