Thursday, March 14 marks this year’s Pi Day – a day celebrated around the world.
Pi, the Greek letter π, is used in math to represent the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. According to PiDay.org, Pi is a constant number and is the same for every circle.
Pi is approximately 3.14, so people celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3/14) around the world. However, Pi is an “irrational and transcendental number,” which means the numbers after the decimal point (3.14159…) continue infinitely without any kind of pattern or repetition. Most calculations only require a few digits after the decimal point, but it has been calculated to over one trillion digits.
