22 miles of SR 52 to be widened in Pasco Co.

Local News

Eastern Pasco County is growing rapidly. In an effort to ease congestion for east-west traffic, the state has four projects planned along a 22-mile-long stretch of State Road 52 between the Suncoast Parkway in the Shady Hills area and Fort King Road in Dade City.

Of the four projects, just one is under construction.

Here’s the list of projects and timelines:

  •     1.5 miles of State Road 52 (Schrader Highway) between CR-581 (Bellamy Brothers Boulevard) and Old Pasco Road are under construction, turning the existing two-lane road into a four-lane divided highway with medians. Other improvements include installing a new traffic signal at Old Pasco Road; replacing the traffic signal at Bellamy Brothers Boulevard; constructing a 12-foot-wide multi-use path along the north side of the road; and adding 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side. Design and construction began in 2016, and is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2019. Construction costs are $13.4 million, according to FDOT. •     3.8 miles of State Road 52 will be widened to six lanes, from the Suncoast Parkway to east of US-41. A 12-foot-wide multi-use trail will be built along the north side of SR-52. The project also includes approximately one mile of widening on US-41 approaching the SR-52 intersection. The project is anticipated to begin in 2019. Design costs are estimated at $3.8 million, with right of way costs of $72 million. The project fact sheet is at this link: http://www.fdottampabay.com/factsheet/266
  •     Approximately 8 miles of State Road 52 will be widened and realigned from Uradco Place to Fort King Road. Between Uradco Place and Bayou Branch Canal, the existing road will be widened to a four-lane divided roadway. East of Bayou Branch Canal, the new alignment of four-lane divided SR-52 will be built south of the existing SR-52 tying into Clinton Avenue. Clinton Avenue between CR-579 and Fort King Road will be widened to a four-lane divided road as well. Clinton Avenue between Pasadena Avenue and US-301 will also become the new SR-52.  The section of existing SR-52 between Bayou Branch Canal and US-301 will be designated County Road 52 after the construction of the new SR-52 is complete.  Design costs are estimated at $2.4 million, with right of way costs of $21 million. The project fact sheet, and a video rendering of the completed project, are at this link: http://www.fdottampabay.com/factsheet/284
  •     State Road 52 will be widened to four lanes between US-41 to Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, a stretch of road approximately 8.5 miles long. To minimize right of way acquisition and impacts to the Conner Preserve, the widening will generally occur to the north of the existing roadway. A 12-foot-wide multi-use trail will be built along the north side of the road as well.  The project is under design.  Construction is not funded at this time. The estimated design cost is $6.8 million, with right-of-way costs of $12.2 million. The project fact sheet is at this link: http://www.fdottampabay.com/factsheet/374

Aside from the completion timeline for the portion of road between Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, and Old Pasco Road, there are no estimates for completion on the projects.
