2019 MLK Day events in the Tampa Bay area

This week we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the country’s best-known civil rights activists.

Dr. King’s birthday is Jan. 15, but MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of the month.

Several events are being held around the Tampa Bay area on Monday, Jan. 21 to honor and celebrate Dr. King.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Clearwater

Where: North Greenwood Recreation Complex and Coachman Park
When: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What: The celebration includes breakfast at the recreation complex and a 10 a.m. march to Coachman Park
Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for children 10 and younger

MLK Day of Service in Plant City

Where: Bing Rooming House at 205 S Allen St.
When: 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
What: Volunteers meet to provide community service. Includes breakfast and lunch for all volunteers.
Cost: Free

Dream Clearwater MLK Run

Where: Memorial Causeway at the intersection of Court Street and Cleveland Street
When: 9 a.m.
What: A 5K run along Memorial Trail to recognize the Clearwater MLK Jr. Neighborhood Center Coalition
Cost: $15

Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Brooksville

Where: Parade starts at Oakwood Drive
When: Parade begins at 10 a.m.
What: Those who participate in the parade will be judged on their MLK-themed decorations and spirit
Cost: Free

MLK Community Festival in Tampa

Where: Cyrus Greene Park/Belmont Heights Little League at 2101 Martin Luther King Boulevard
When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
What: An annual community gospel program with vendors, face painting and a bounce house
Cost: Free

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration in Port Richey

Where: Union Missionary Baptist Church at 6235 Pine Hill Road
When: 10:30 a.m.
What: You can join the African American Club of Pasco at the church for a march to the Booker T. Washington Schoolhouse and a ceremony
Cost: Free

MLK Dream Big Parade in St. Petersburg

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Tampa

Where: Cuscaden Park at 2900 North 15th Street
When: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
What: An annual community parade that includes floats, cars, trucks, bands and more
Cost: Free

MLK Family Fun Day in St. Petersburg

Where: Tropicana Field at 1 Tropicana Drive (Outside Lot 6)
When: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
What: Community representatives and civic groups will host family activities and provide information on health, finances, child safety, employment, spirituality and more
Cost: Free

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hillsborough County Interfaith Service

Where: Allen Temple AME at 2101 Lowe Street in Tampa
When: 4 p.m.
What: A memorial service with music, speakers and awards for members of the community
Cost: Free

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Vigil in St. Petersburg

Where: Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum at 2240 Ninth Avenue South
When: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
What: A candlelight ceremony that will pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.s’ works
