Stores in Clearwater and Brandon are among the next round of Sears and Kmart locations closing this year.

According to Business Insider, Sears will close another 40 stores by August. That’s in addition to the more than 100 stores that were already set to close.

The new list of stores includes 31 Sears locations and 9 Kmart locations throughout 24 states.

The Sears at Countryside Mall on US-19 in Clearwater and the Kmart on Brandon Boulevard in Brandon are among those stores.

A company spokesman sent this statement to News Channel 8:

“We are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store in Clearwater. The store will close to the public in mid-July 2018. Until then, it will remain open for customers…We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced. This is not an effort solely aimed at cost savings but is part of a strategy we’ have been executing against as many of our larger stores are too big for our needs. Having fewer stores – and the right format – will help us bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world.”

The spokesman says the store’s liquidation sale began in late April. They did not say how many employees would be impacted. They did tell us eligible employees will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for openings at other Sears or Kmart stores in the area.

Four other Sears stores in Florida are also on the list. They include locations in Pensacola, Gainesville, Plantation and Titusville.
