USF police chief questions college safety report

Hillsborough County

A group called Alarms.org has issued a report on the Safest Colleges in America.

At the top of the list is Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee, followed by South Georgia State College and then Elon.

Near the bottom of the list, at 382 is the University of South Florida. That’s just below MIT and just above Harvard.

Alarms.org says they used FBI crime stats and other factors to produce the list.

The chief of police for USF Is questioning the report, its findings and methodology.

“They reference police adequacy but there is no description of what that entails,” said Daniel.

Around campus, students say they feel safe.

“At USF, I’ve always felt pretty safe. The surrounding area is seedy sometimes, but as far as on campus, I’ve never felt in danger before,” said student Aaron Carll.

“I’ve never felt unsafe on campus definitely off campus is like sketchy, fletchy, like it’s definitely not the best but on campus there is like police walking around all the time,” said student Emily Dorell.

Chief Daniel says he knows the area around campus has crime problems, but his agency works with other local law enforcement agencies to combat crime around the entire area.

“We understand there are some challenging areas around the campus but I think as a unified group we do a very good job of keeping crime away from USF and dealing with it as best we can,” said Daniel.

Attempts to contact Alarm.org for clarification about the report were not successful.
