Tampa’s Temple Twirlers celebrate ‘International Square Dance Month’ in style

Hillsborough County

September is International Square Dance Month and Tampa’s Temple Twirlers are also celebrating 38 years of being in existence.

The Temple Twirlers is one of a few square dance groups in the Tampa Bay area. They dance at Oak Grove Methodist Church on Mondays and on Thursdays they have classes and workshops for beginners.

Ron Reardon is the square dance caller for the Temple Twirlers and he has been calling for 42 years. He says he has been honored five times as “New England Caller of the Year.”

“It’s a family-oriented sport and you can not beat the friendships you make. It’s the best cardiovascular exercise and it’s awesome for dementia and Alzheimer’s,” Reardon said.
