Tampa police expand Special Needs Registry

Hillsborough County

The Tampa Police Department wants to let residents know they could benefit from a new program.

The department launched a voluntary Special Needs Registry.

It started as a way for the department to identify homes where children with Autism live, so they are aware of any communications issues. Now the program is expanding to help serve more people.

“You might have someone who has Alzheimer’s, you might have someone who has a mental disability. You might have someone who has a hearing impairment.  When police go out to the house we don’t want there to be any misunderstandings under a stressful situation,” said Steve Hegarty. “It is a way to keep everyone safe.”
