TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Memorial Day travel is shaping up to be one of the busiest in more than a decade, according to AAA.
Transportation experts with the auto club group say Florida drivers should be happier at the pump with some of the lowest gas prices in two years.
Right now we’re within the time frame of the busiest part of the travel weekend, which started Thursday with the peak times continuing into Friday night.
Travel experts with AAA say a stronger economy and weaker gas prices should help boost travel numbers this weekend.
AAA is expecting the strongest start to the summer travel season since 2005.
The national average is coming in at around $2.85 per gallon, according to AAA. That’s lower than this time last year.
Floridians overall will pay less than others with an average at $2.62 per gallon, but Tampa Bay drivers will be happy to hear this; The average gas prices in our region are some of the lowest in the state at $2.54 per gallon.
Overall, AAA is expecting 37 million Americans to take a road trip.
More than three million will fly and nearly two million will travel by cruise, train or bus.
Travel experts say the most congested areas will be around popular attractions like theme parks and beaches.
