Authorities say a standoff with a man who barricaded himself inside of a Town ‘N’ Country home has ended and the man has died.
Officials with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office say multiple 911 calls came in around 5:30 a.m. Thursday about a potential shooting in a neighborhood near Longboat Boulevard.
The man has been identified as Michel “Frenchy” Barbeau, 47.
“There was some type of altercation between members were visiting the household that started [the incident],” said Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Donna Lusczynski.
Deputies responded to the scene and found two women, ages 30 and 40, had been shot. The sheriff’s office confirmed one of the women is Barbeau’s girlfriend.
Both women were taken to the hospital and are currently in stable condition.
Homes in the area were evacuated and deputies spent about five hours negotiating with Barbeau, but lost contact shortly after noon.
A number of people, including friends and an attorney, responded to the scene and tried to get Barbeau to come out of the home, authorities said.
Deputies deployed a high-pressure water device to get into the home, but were unsuccessful.
They had robots, which they were able to speak through, knock on the windows to try to get him to come out.
They eventually entered the home with tear gas and Barbeau was found dead.
Authorities said the man had no criminal history and made no threats to law enforcement.
An investigation is ongoing.
