There’s a spike in crime in one Hillsborough County neighborhood – literally.
Someone has placed pieces of garden hose laced with nails on driveways in the Fawn Lake subdivision in Citrus Park. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, calling it a criminal mischief case.
Someone posted about it this week on the Westchase Neighborhood News Facebook page
“Those of us who leave early in (the) am before the sun comes up unfortunately didn’t see them,” one woman wrote. “Many of us had to get new tires today.”
Ed Pelaez is one of those victims. He believes his wife picked up one of the ‘spike sticks’ while driving down White Elk Lane.
“Heard a noise in the tire and checked the tire,” said Pelaez. “And there was a nail attached – a water hose filled with nails attached to the tire.”
Pelaez called AAA Auto Club to come and change the tire. Now he has to buy a new one. He calls the situation aggravating.
“It’s frustrating for sure and totally unnecessary,” he said. “Somebody goes out and commits a crime and they gain something. But this – there is nothing to gain. It’s just kind of frustrating.”
Deputies are urging residents to review any surveillance video they may have and forward anything they see that looks suspicious to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
