Secretary of State visits Macdill amid rising mideast tensions

Hillsborough County

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Macdill Air Force base on Tuesday meeting with General Richard D. Clarke of U.S. Special Operations Command and General Kenneth F. McKenzie at U.S. Central Command.
The meetings come as tension is rising in the middle east. CENTCOM released photos last week they say are proof the government of Iran is engaging in attacks of oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
“The purpose of my visit was to come down here and make sure that the State Department and Department of Defense were deeply coordinated across a whole broad range of issues. We certainly discussed, we certainly talked about the tension in the Gulf, but we talked about a much broader range of issues,” said Pompeo.
Pompeo who is a graduate of West Point and the former Director of the Central Intelligence agency understands the roll CENTCOM and SOCOM would play if any hostilities would start with Iran, he addressed cameras before departing, sending a direct message to the leadership of Iran.
“We have been engaged in many messages, even this moment right here, communicating to Iran that we are there to deter aggression. President Trump does not want war,” said Pompeo.
As the Secretary of State Departed Macdill Air Force Base the President sent out a tweet about the acting Secretary of Defense. The President announcing Patrick Shanahan would not go forward with his confirmation process to become the next Secretary of Defense.
Multiple news agencies reported the announcement came after an FBI investigation showed Shanahan had been involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife in 2010.
Due to the timing of the announcement, it’s not clear if Secretary Pompeo was aware of the President’s intentions regarding Shanahan while he visited military commanders at Macdill.
