Riverview teacher arrested for allegedly slapping student

Hillsborough County

RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) – A Riverview teacher was arrested after she allegedly slapped a student in her classroom Friday afternoon.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was called to Giunta Middle School, 4202 S Falkenburg Road, just before noon after the 13-year-old boy reported that Sheila Vakili struck him in the face during class.

Deputies interviewed the victim and other students inside of the classroom during the incident and said their stories were consistent.

The victim reportedly made a profane comment during class, which Vakili heard and thought was directed at her. The teacher then smacked the victim in his face with enough force to cause redness and swelling, according to witnesses.

The student’s parents were called to the school.

Vakili refused to be interviewed by deputies at the advising of her attorney and a representative from a teacher’s union.

She was arrested for simple battery-child abuse and held at the Orient Road Jail on a $2,000 bond. She was later released after posting bail.
