Publix opens first store on college campus at USF in Tampa

TAMPA, FLA. (WFLA) - Publix and the University of South Florida celebrated the grand opening of a store on campus Thursday during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Officials from the grocery chain and university leaders held a ceremony at the new location at 4425 E. Fletcher Ave. and USF Palm Drive in Tampa.

A company spokesperson said the location is their first store to be built on a college campus.

It’s open to the public and will employ roughly 145 people. A company spokesperson says more than 50 students will make up the workforce.

The new store features a deli design that is only used at one other Publix in the Tampa Bay area.

Customers will also be able to utilize Wi-Fi, work from a café inside the store and buy USF Bulls merchandise.

There are more than 1,200 Publix stores across the Southeast.

The company is one of the 10 largest-volume supermarket chains in the country and employs more than 190,000 people, according to the company website.
