BLOG: President Trump spends day in Tampa for rally, event at high school

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - President Donald Trump visited Tampa on Tuesday. It was his second visit since he took office.

The president stopped at Tampa Bay Technical High School for a roundtable discussion before heading to the Florida State Fairgrounds for a rally.

Here's the latest on his visit and the response to it:

8:31 p.m.:

President Trump has wrapped up a campaign-style rally at the Florida State Fairgrounds.


7:08 p.m.:

President Trump arrives to the Florida State Fairgrounds for a rally.


6:53 p.m.:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam tweets a welcome to Florida for President Trump. The president is rallying tonight for Putnam's Republican opponent, Rep. Ron DeSantis.

"I look forward to continuing your success in 2020 by keeping our state a conservative stronghold and growing Florida's $1 trillion economy," Putnam tweeted.



6:35 p.m.:

President Trump has wrapped up his visit to Tampa Bay Technical High School. He will now head to the Florida State Fairgrounds for a rally.


6:34 p.m.:

President Trump signs a copy of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, enabling state grants for STEM education, for Tampa Bay Technical High School.


6:18 p.m.:

President Trump has taken the stage at Tampa Bay Technical School.

6:15 p.m.:

Florida Governor Rick Scott and Ivanka Trump take the stage at Tampa Bay Technical School ahead of President Trump.

5:55 p.m.:

Protesters are starting to clash with President Trump's supporters outside the Florida Fairgrounds where the president will be rallying tonight.

President Trump walks off Air Force One with his children Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump as well as Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Florida Governor and Senate candidate Rick Scott and Rep. Matt Gaetz were also with him.


5:30 p.m.:

President Trump has landed in Tampa on Air Force One.


5:15 p.m.

A large crowd has gathered behind the media area and are confronting CNN's Jim Acosta.

4:40 p.m.:

Limos have arrived for President Trump at Tampa International Airport. His estimated time of arrival is around 5:35 p.m. News Channel 8 is told he will spend around 30 minutes at Tampa Bay Technical High School.


4:35 p.m.:

Tampa International Airport says a couple dozen people are on top of the short term parking garage waiting for Air Force One to arrive.




4:30 p.m.:

News Channel 8's Peter Bernard is awaiting President Trump's arrival at Tampa International Airport.


4:23 p.m.:

There is a large crowd already gathered before President Trump's arrival.


3:20 p.m.:

Air Force One is preparing to leave Washington and begin its flight to Tampa.


2:20 p.m.:

Mayor Philip Levine's gubernatorial campaign releases a statement and a new digital ad ahead of President Trump's visit.

"Florida Democrats can change the course of history and end the Trump nightmare by voting on August 28th - and electing the one Democrat ready to get the job done," senior campaign advisor Christian Ulvert said in a statement. "Philip Levine is ready to break the 20-year Republican rule in Tallahassee and deliver a win for Democrats on November 6th.”


1:50 p.m.:

A security sweep is underway at Tampa International Airport ahead of President Trump's arrival.


1 p.m.:

News Channel 8 political reporter Evan Donovan spoke with several supporters of President Trump as they wait for Tuesday night's rally.


12:20 p.m.:

Attorney General Pam Bondi releases a statement saying she will greet President Trump and welcome him to her hometown when he lands in Tampa.

"I look forward to seeing the President in our great state and welcoming him to my hometown. Thanks to the President’s leadership, America’s economy is strong and GDP growth has reached an incredible 4.1 percent," she said in a statement.


11:30 a.m.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gwen Graham announces she's calling on Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to release all of her office's records of communication with President Trump.

"Floridians asked their state for help when Donald Trump ripped them off, and Pam Bondi chose her campaign donor instead of the people,” Graham said in a statement. “Other attorneys general chose to hold Trump University accountable and won justice for their citizens. Floridians deserve to know why Bondi chose not to pursue charges — and they deserve to know if she has done any other favors for Trump.”


11:10 a.m.:

A C-17 visits Tampa International Airport in preparation for the arrival of Air Force One.


10:20 a.m.:

Rep. Ron DeSantis tweets that President Trump will be joining him for a "YUGE rally!"


9:50 a.m.:

An argument broke out near the fairgrounds while people waited for President Trump to arrive in Tampa.

Supporters of President Trump continue to gather at the fairgrounds, several hours ahead of his rally.




9:15 a.m.:

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris King has released a statement on President Trump's visit and a new ad from Republican Gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis.

“Between Congressman DeSantis’ new television ad and today’s rally in Tampa, the Republican race for governor is now a choice between a proud NRA sellout and a proud Trump sellout," King's statement said. "The congressman’s baby is very cute, but there's nothing cute about an ad that stokes racism and fear and has zero substance on what he’ll do to tackle actual problems that real people face in Florida every day."


8:30 a.m.:

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum sends a tweet to President Trump ahead of his visit, saying he believes he deserves to be impeached.

"Welcome back to Florida, @realDonaldTrump. My name is Andrew Gillum and I'm the only candidate for Governor who believes you deserve to be impeached," he wrote. "So does everyone else who RTs this."



The tweet has more than 4,000 retweets and another 4,000 likes.


8:20 a.m.: 

President Trump tweets about his Tampa rally and endorses Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Ron DeSantis.

The president says DeSantis is, "Strong on Crime, Borders and our 2nd Amendment. Big help on Tax & Regulation Cuts. Loves our Military & our Vets."


8 a.m.:

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn tweets that the "Venom and Vitriol tour" is coming to the Fairgrounds.

"In our city, we value the contributions of everybody regardless of who you love or the God you worship and honor our the foundation built by our immigrant forefathers," he wrote. "America is stronger when we inspire, not demonize."


5 a.m.:

President Trump supporters have already started lining up outside the Florida State Fairgrounds for his rally. Some say they arrived as early as 3:30 a.m.
