Detectives are investigating a possible case of animal cruelty involving two peacocks in a Riverview neighborhood.
A person living in the Boyette Springs neighborhood filed a report Friday with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reporting that at least two peacocks were found dead. The birds were found dead Wednesday on Windswept Avenue.
Neighbors told detectives several domesticated peacocks roam in the area. They believe someone may have been targeting the birds and shooting them with a pellet gun.
Detectives say a witness saw four teenagers in a black four-door Ford F-150 in the area just before the dead birds were found. The truck had black rims, a busted tail light and a Costa sticker in the back window, the sheriff’s office says. The witness also saw two white teenage boys riding in the bed of the truck holding pellet guns.
Detectives are now searching for surveillance video footage from neighbors.
Whoever is responsible for the deaths will face felony animal cruelty and criminal mischief charges, the sheriff’s office says.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (813) 247-8200.
