Mystery Solved! Baffling noise heard by Davis Islands residents for hours Friday

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - We now know what caused a loud, unusual noise that could be heard for hours near downtown Tampa Friday morning.

People living on Davis Islands reported hearing the noise, which sounded like a jet engine, around 4 a.m.

The noise was so loud and continuous, comments about it filled the Davis Islands “Nextdoor” social media app.

WFLA 8 On Your Side received several calls in the newsroom from residents who were concerned and baffled by the unusual noise.

One caller opened her front door during the phone conversation and the loud noise could be easily heard.

WFLA 8 On Your Side made phone calls to local agencies and emergency officials. It turns out the noise was caused by TECO’s Bayside Power Station.

A TECO spokesperson said there is nothing wrong. Crews had to vent some steam from one of the units at the Bayside Power Station and the process is very loud. The noise was expected to end on Friday morning.

The TECO Bayside Power Station is located at 3602 Port Sutton Rd. in Tampa.
