TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Before an audience of airmen, Col. Adam D. Bingham assumed command of the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill Air Force Base on Friday.
Col. Bingham took command in a ceremony at the base from outgoing Colonel Benjamin Jonsson. Col. Bingham recently served in Texas at an Air Force base in Laughlin.
Bingham told his new unit he’s excited to be here.
“I mean, who doesn’t want to be in beautiful Tampa, Florida on this amazing installation. It’s world class,” Bingham said.
He will serve at a time when the 6th Air Refueling wing is looking to make a major change as it transitions from the older and smaller KC-135 to the newer and larger KC-46 refueling tanker.
“I think it will be largely my role as the wing commander here to get us prepared for the delivery of the first KC-46. I love the fact that the 6th air refueling wing is going to be the sixth main operating base for the 46,” Bingham said. “I’ve often termed the or coined the 6th is the 6th and so we are really excited for that mission set and in the next two years make sure we are ready for the KC-46.”
He will also face a challenge as he tries to find affordable housing for the young men and women in his command who are assigned to the base.
“In the next week or so I’ll meet with my team and we’ll formulate a plan of what we plan to do to solve some of those issues,” Bingham said. “But I think there is nothing we can’t solve together with the Tampa community.’
