Hillsborough youth show off first responder skills during summer program

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) - Hillsborough County youth are getting an early look at what it takes to be a firefighter and first responder during Fire Rescue's annual Summer Youth Fire Academy.

The Summer Youth Fire Academy is offered by the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Foundation. It presents an opportunity for kids to participate in hands-on and classroom activities.

Program curriculum includes:

  • History of the fire service
  • Fire ground operations
  • Hands only CPR and first aid
  • Use of firefighting bunker gear
  • Ropes and knots
  • Fire behavior
  • Ladder climb
  • Water safety
  • Public education
  • Emergency dispatch

The academy is open to any Hillsborough student or graduating senior ages 14-18 who are interested in a career in Fire Rescue.
