HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies rescued a puppy from a storm drain on Tuesday.

While on patrol, Deputy Tara Quezada was flagged down by residents. They told her a small puppy fell into a drain filled with water and the puppy was struggling to stay afloat.

Deputy Quezada’s zone partner, Deputy Zachary Shute, arrived with tools and together they were able to remove the storm drain cover.

The puppy was deep within the drain and couldn’t be reached by deputies, even with a net provided by a bystander.

The deputies formulated a new plan and Deputy Shute grabbed Deputy Quezada’s duty belt and lowered her head-first into the storm drain with the net to rescue the puppy.

The deputies nicknamed the puppy “Poncho.”

Unable to find Poncho’s owner, they took the puppy to the Hillsborough County Pet Rescue Center.
