HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – As fire broke out at the Captiva Apartment in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Leah Stone and her mother had to move her elderly grandmother out of the burning building.
“We had to get her up out of bed. We have two little dogs, so we had to make sure we piled them in too our cars and drove away. She’s also on oxygen, so we had to make sure we got her away as quickly and safely as possible,” said Stone.
They all made it out safely. Three of their neighbors did not. A mother and her two children were killed in the fire.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is working to confirm the identities of the victims using dental records.
Hillsborough County says they are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
Leah Stone and her mother worked Thursday, with no sleep, to move their belongings out of the damaged building.
“It’s really heartbreaking that our home is gone and people that we actually really care about right up there, their house was damaged and so it’s a really painful experience,” said Stone.
Now they will have to find a new place to live.
“So, we are just going to restart again and just hope everything works out for the best,” said Stone.
