Hillsborough County may adopt new bathhouse ordinance

Hillsborough County

The fight to stop human trafficking is widening in Hillsborough County. It’s a result of an 8 On Your Side investigation on storefronts for sex on Kennedy Boulevard.

After the city of Tampa finally agreed to revise the bathhouse ordinance in the city, Hillsborough County may follow their lead.

Hillsborough County’s ordinance would provide for a permitting process and the regulation of massage and bathhouse establishments and employees. Going a step further to crack down on human trafficking, the ordinance would also require an educational process for employees of these establishments.

This started when 8 On Your Side pointed out nearly all of the Asian spas on Kennedy Boulevard in Tampa appeared on adult sex sites, but police rarely busted anyone inside for prostitution.
A Clean Up Kennedy movement began, and eventually the new bathhouse ordinance was enacted requiring permits and inspections.

Our Mark Douglas will be at the Hillsborough County meeting this morning. Commissioners are expected to start talking about it around 10 a.m.
