WestShore Plaza had to be briefly evacuated Tuesday when a fire broke out on one of the mall’s escalators.

Tampa firefighters were called to the mall around 9:30 a.m. By the time they got there, mall security had already evacuated the building to make sure the customers were safe.

Firefighters attacked the flames and were able to quickly extinguish them. The fire was contained to one bank of escalators near the southeast entrance of the mall, a spokesman says.

Investigators say a worker was performing maintenance on the escalator when the flames broke out. The fire appears to be accidental.

Tampa Fire Rescue crews are still at the scene trying to ventilate the building. No injuries were reported.
