TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update in a deputy-involved shooting that took place Tuesday night off Skipper Road.
According to Sheriff Chad Chronister, deputies received two calls of domestic violence at Jasmine Terrace Apartments around 7:42 p.m.
A family dispute began for unknown reasons while in a parking lot, resulting in the suspect striking his sister. A short time later, the suspect threw his mother to the ground resulting in a minor head injury.
A deputy responded to the scene within five minutes and identified the 17-year-old suspect who had walked away from the apartment and was walking along the road.
Sheriff Chronister said Deputy Estanislau became in fear for his safety due to his belief that the suspect possessed a weapon. He then ordered the suspect to “Drop the gun, drop the gun.” Deputy Estanislau fired two rounds from his issued service weapon, striking the suspect once in the upper body. No weapon was found at the scene.
The 17-year-old was taken to Tampa General Hospital and is in critical but stable condition.
A formal interview with Deputy Estanislau is pending. State Attorney Andrew Warren was on scene Tuesday night and his office has been involved with this investigation from its preliminary stages. Deputy Estanislau has been placed on administrative leave per policy, pending a complete investigation and review by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office.
Daniel Estanislau, 26, has been employed with the sheriff’s office since Oct. 2015. He received a letter of counseling in April 2017 after being involved in a traffic crash.
The suspect’s family is with him and is being updated by our office as information becomes available about the investigation. Sheriff Chad Chronister has been able to speak with the suspect’s mother. He expressed sympathy for what their family is going through and has explained how the investigative process will work, as the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office thoroughly examines the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The Sheriff’s Office says the teen has a prior criminal history however, due to Florida public record’s law no other details will be released.
This is an active investigation and this is all the information available at this time.
