Beating the ‘Summer Slide’ with books and games

Hillsborough County

Keeping the mind active and engaged during the summer months doesn’t mean you have to sit in a classroom doing homework. To avoid turning the kids into screen zombies or just spending all day outdoors there are fun ways to keep them learning.

The folks at Learning Express in South Florida specializes in smart toys and activities. There are workbooks that are inexpensive and last all summer that will give the kids some activities they can do daily.

“These are just some good workbooks (Summer Bridge). They go over reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and fitness. There are tons of different activities,” says Cortni Claar with Learning Express in South Tampa.

Just one book can last all summer.

Crafts can also be fun and still educational, and also make great gifts!

“You can make your own bath bombs, and it comes with everything that you need to do so. You’ve got all your different Epsom salts, you’ve got cornstarch, your food coloring,” says Claar. “It gives really good detailed visual as well as written instructions so if they’re doing it on their own they don’t so much need their parent to help them.”

For something more active for the kids STEM learning is a great way to get a little more hands on. For close to $50 a kit can teach about electricity and how circuits function.

“This is snap circuits. There’s a ton of different projects that you can work on. This one is specifically is the Arcade one. You can have lights, you can have fans,” shows Claar. “You can see that’s project 132. This one here has over 200 hundred projects that you can work on.”

That’s not all. Look for fun places that will create activities for kids and give you, mom and dad, a break during the day.

Learning Express holds activities at their store throughout the summer. If you want to know more head to their Facebook page.
