Four criminals were so determined to get inside the West Marine store on U.S. Highway 41 in Apollo Beach that they took down part of a cinder block wall to achieve their goal.
Once inside, it appears they knew how to avoid detection.
“They took their time. All the alarm systems have been disabled at this point. Don’t know how that happened,” said Danny Alvarez of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
A picture snapped by the security system shows one of the men giving a thumbs up, possibly just before the system was shut down.
They ransacked the place, pulling electronics off shelves and yanking fishing rods from holders.
Deputies tell News Channel 8 more than $200,000 worth of goods were gone in just a few hours.
Exterior surveillance video shows two of the men walking by with plywood used to cover the hole.
Then, some of the criminals drove away in a white Chevrolet Suburban with blue racing stripes.
They also used a U-Haul truck to store the merchandise.
“It was very brazen that they were in there for quite a long time. So they felt they knew the system, they knew the way the place works,” Alvarez said.
No arrests have been made.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $3,000 reward for any information that leads to arrests.
