We’re hitting spring break this week which means summer is right around the corner.  8 On Your Side has found some affordable summer camp options that many people don’t know about.

Summer camps are fun, educational, and sure to have your kids tired by the end of the day!

When you talk to the kids at the Emanuele P. Johnson Center they love their time with friends.

“When we have our ups and downs, if we’re not feeling good they keep us going,” says Aaliyah Warren a 5th grader who goes to the camps.

Others like the challenge that comes on the court.

“I like to one up everybody when it comes to shooting. Coach TC is a real challenge when it comes to three points so I have to really try my best,” says Thomas Walker a 6th grader who also enjoys the summer camps.

Coach TC is just one of several counselors that help these kids stay well rounded throughout the summer in Hillsborough County.

“You’ll see behind me they’re playing dodgeball ,so it’s organized sports. We also have arts and crafts, we do reading time, and we just kind of want the kids to be out and be active,” says Dana McDonald with Hillsborough Parks and Rec.

“My mom likes it that we don’t come home until around 6 and that we get all of our energy out so we’re ready to go to bed,” says Thomas between laughs.

There’s the sports, snack time, field trips, and yes, arts and crafts time.

The two-week camps are affordable too. Just $76 per child or if they have a free and reduced lunch letter it could start as low as $40!

“We really wanted to offer and being the county we are able to subsidize some of the costs so that it is affordable for parents because otherwise, the county kids are going to be at home, playing video games, possibly getting into trouble. So we wanted to offer an affordable place for them to come,” says McDonald

That’s not all. They have specialty camps as well. Camps for those who like to fish or spend time in the outdoors and more.
