The developers of Midtown Tampa announced Wednesday two dual-branded hotels will be built as part of the $500 million project.
Aloft and Element, both owned by Marriott, are expected to break ground this summer with an opening planned for 2021. The millennial-geared brands will coexist in the same building footprint, with each hotel maintaining its own distinct look.
In addition to the cityscape and water views from the rooftop lounge, guests will share a central lobby experience and other hotel amenities including a Bistro and a chef-driven restaurant featuring small plates.
Occupying more than 20 acres where Dale Mabry Highway meets I-275, Midtown Tampa describes itself as the city’s first mixed-used project combining retail, residential, and office space in a high-density development.
Nick Haines is the CEO of Midtown’s developer, Bromley Companies. Haines calls the project an economic catalyst that will bridge the disconnect between Tampa’s Westshore district with South Tampa and downtown.
“We’re basically building a city within a city,” Haines said. “There’s incredible untapped development opportunities.”
Nearby businesses say the project’s buzz is already generating a boost for their own bottom lines.
Andrew Tambuzzo opened the Boozy Pig, a cafe and butcher shop, with his father less than three weeks ago on Cypress St. It’s about a block from will Midtown will be.
“I think it’s going to drive business for sure,” he said, confident the workers, residents, and tourists of Midtown alike will patronize his new venture.
He agrees with Haines that Midtown will create a great connector for South and West Tampa. For a fledgling business like his own, the development may even be the link to his own success.
“You can definitely feel it, South Tampa moving north of Kennedy, Westshore and downtown trying to join together,” Tambuzzo explained. “I kind of feel like we’re in the middle of that.”
Bromley Companies expects to announce in the next few weeks more businesses coming to Midtown, including some that will be new to the Tampa Bay area.
