TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Brandon residents went into hiding in their homes Friday morning after a brazen shootout in broad daylight.
“Just heard a bunch of pops,” said Kim Sharpe, a neighbor. “I thought it was actually firecrackers.”
The shooting had some people scared for their lives.
“No, I wasn’t coming outside when them bullets flying,” said Carroll Hall. “But after it was over we came out. I wouldn’t come out here while they were shooting.”
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, two men shot each other on Mook Street, fled the scene, then ended up at the Lakewood Place Apartments on Lake Chapman Drive.
“It was just shocking,” Sharpe exclaimed.
At the apartment complex, the black SUV the men were driving went through a fence and into a neighboring building, which is where police caught up with them. There were massive crime scenes at both Mook Street and the apartment complex.
“I’m all like,” Hall said. “This is crazy.”
Officials said the two males were taken to Tampa General Hospital after the incident. One was rushed to the hospital as a trauma alert. The other had non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Both are in stable condition as of Friday afternoon.
Investigators were searching for some people involved in the shooting at an apartment complex on Lake Chapman Drive, but now say all parties are accounted for. Investigators also pulled a gun from Lake Chapman near the apartment complex, but cannot confirm if that gun is connected to the shooting.

Though the neighborhood is mostly quiet, there have been some issues. One neighbor told 8 On Your Side her window was shot through recently, and another said she woke up to gunshots in the street in front of her house.
“But we did have problems over here,” Sharpe explained. “And then two houses down a while back.”
The shock value of the shooting has put some people on edge.
“You wonder if you’re safe in your house,” Hall said.
