Hillsborough County students vote on new lunch menu items

News

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Dishes like fresh pasta with pesto and quinoa salad sound like they belong on the menu of a five-star restaurant, but they could soon be served at local public schools.

On Wednesday hundreds of students chowed down and voiced their opinions on what they think should be served in the lunch line during the next school year in Tampa.

The Hillsborough County School District’s 7th Annual Fresh Flavors – Food for Body and Mind Expo allowed more than 250 students to taste and rate new items, including a gyro flatbread sandwich and a Funfetti quinoa salad.

“The more we present healthy foods and out them in front of them, the more likely it will be that they will take them,” Student Nutrition Services General Manager Dr. Mary Kate Harrison said.

With their taste buds as the final judge, students votes will be tallied up, deciding which meals make the menu and which ones stay on the cutting board.

A clear favorite among students? The turkey bacon cheeseburger.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
