Authorities say four people are dead after a head-on crash in Highlands County.
Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened on State Road 70 near County Road 721 in Lake Placid just before 12:30 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Troopers described the collision as a head-on crash.
According to FHP, a man driving a Buick with a female passenger in the car was traveling west in the eastbound lane, overtaking other westbound traffic on SR 70 and approached a left curve.
A second vehicle, driven by Judy Mounts, 56, of Port St. Lucie, carrying Destiny Frantz, 16, was traveling east on the road, approaching the same curve as the Buick.
Family tells us Mounts is Frantz’ grandmother. The two were spending Christmas together because Mounts’ husband had died recently and Frantz didn’t want her to be alone.
The cars collided head-on and the Buick overturned into a ditch and became engulfed in flames.
Mounts and Frantz were killed in the crash, as were the driver and passenger in the Buick, who have yet to be identified.
“It was devastating. Devastating,” said Dan Scheibel, a volunteer firefighter with Sun N Lake Fire Rescue.
“I mean, it is stressful. You know in your head that these are real people. You look at the accident scene and you say, ‘somebody made a really bad decision and now other people have to pay for it.'”
