BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) – For six years a gentle, loving Weimaraner-mix named Roofus has been living in a kennel at the Bishop Animal Shelter in Bradenton.
Roofus been patiently waiting to find a new home but he hasn’t had any luck. Some folks gave him a shot, only to bring him back.
Recently, staffers uncovered a long-forgotten letter that they hope will help him find a new family.
The letter was written in 2010 by Roofus’ original owners and submitted when they turned him in. It is penned in the first person, as if Roofus had written it himself.
It reads:“My name is Roofus. My family loves me very much but they have fallen on hard times. My daddy lost his job a year ago and can’t find a new one. My mommy tells me they have to downsize to a smaller apartment and can’t afford to keep me. I will miss my two-legged siblings so much. They keep crying and hugging me, begging mommy and daddy not to take me back to the shelter. I remember being at the shelter before. Your staff is very kind and nothing compares to a family. My family is very sad to give me back to Bishop but they know you’ll find me a new family that will love me just as much. They’re including my bed and favorite toys. Please find me a good home.Love,Roofus”
Kennel staff member Megan Mayer cried when she read the letter. Roofus is beloved here. “We love him. He’s been here so long too, it’s kind of hard not to,” Mayer said.
Even at 10 years old, Roofus is always energetic, excited and happy to see you. “It’s hard for anyone not to like love him when they meet him,” Mayer said.
Over the years families tried to adopt him only to bring him back. Some said he wasn’t a good fit; others said he was too old.
“It’s a lot harder for (older dogs) to get adopted,” Mayer said.
Recently while sifting through Roofus’ file, a staffer uncovered the letter. They’re hoping it touches someone who will eventually adopt him.
The letter serves as a reminder that Roofus is not forgotten. It shows he’s worth loving and caring for. He was a dearly beloved member of a family.
