Two guinea pigs are now under the care of an animal hospital after they were found discarded in a Manatee County dumpster.

Justin Matthews of Matthews Wildlife Rescue got the call on Monday. He tells 8 On Your Side that morning a woman walked to a dumpster at Blackstone Park in Palmetto. She attempted to throw something away when something caught her eye- a plastic container with two guinea pigs inside.

Matthews says it appears the guinea pigs were pets at one time that had been discarded. There was no food or water inside the plastic container.

Matthews says its unclear how long the guinea pigs have been there. The animals had long claws that needed to be clipped but were well behaved. Matthews said they appeared to be in good health but they were extremely hungry and thirsty.

“I just think some people are sick in the head. That they don’t realize that animals have feelings just like we do,” said Matthews.

The animals are now in the care of Bayshore Animal Hospital in Bradenton.

Palmetto Police have been notified and whoever did this could potentially face animal cruelty charges.

If you have any information on the case, call Palmetto police.
