Giant manta ray jumps from Gulf to surprise fisherman – VIDEO

News

It’s not his catch of the day, but a Texas fisherman got a thrill when a giant manta ray jumped out of the water next to his fishing kayak.

“I thought it was a dolphin,” Mark DeLaRosa of MDLR Fishing said.

DeLaRosa posted the video he shot with his GoPro on his YouTube channel and it went viral.

“I’ve seen a lot of smaller rays but this one takes the cake!!!”

He was in his Hobie Outback 2018 model when he saw the manta ray jump out of the Gulf of Mexico off Freeport jetty, about 60 miles south of Houston.

DeLaRosa is a recently retired U.S. Marine who spends his time now fishing.

He thinks the clear blue waters along the Texas shoreline recently may be the reason for the sighting. Winds and currents have changed in the Gulf, bringing waters from the south instead of the  mud from the Mississippi River.

“With all the blue water sticking around longer than usual. A lot of new fish are making their presence know,” he posted on his YouTube channel.
