MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) — Police in South Florida searched for “several dozen vehicles” in a lake Tuesday morning.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said it received information from a citizen who was diving in a lake in the Doral area.
The civilian told police that he observed the vehicles inside the water, which led to officers from the MDPD and Doral Police Department working together to recover the vehicles.
MDPD Spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta said the first vehicle they recovered was confirmed to be stolen.
“These are most likely the type of vehicles we’re going to find in this lake,” Zabaleta said. “Vehicles that perhaps have been abandoned and they wanted to get rid of them, and they got rid of them here, or those that took them for a joy ride, they were stolen and then they were dumped inside the lake.”
The spokesperson said the vehicles could be linked to any crime like fraud or homicide. However, there has been no indication that the vehicles are connected to any murders, as of this report.
“Let’s see how many cases we can close,” Zabaleta said.
Police divers said they saw about 20 vehicles in the water, but it is not known how many there are.
“[The] majority of the vehicles in there are very old vehicles, just like the one we just saw, leading us to believe that these vehicles were dumped in this lake probably way before these warehouses were even here,” Zabaleta said.
The vehicles pulled from the lake appeared to be in poor condition with algae and other vegetation growing on them. However, the MDPD said they can still run VINs to see if the cars are connected to any active cases.
