VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) —Two people were killed in a plane crash on Wednesday night in Florida, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said the crash happened in the woods east of Lake Ashby, off Pell Road and Lopez Road in Osteen.

“Because the downed airplane was heavily damaged and upside down, and it was impossible to immediately confirm the number of occupants,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “It was initially believed only one person was on board, but it was later reported that two people (a flight instructor and passenger) were in the plane.”

Neither the flight instructor or their passenger survived, deputies said. Their names are being withheld pending notification of kin, WESH reported.

The sheriff’s office said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will investigate the crash.
