Ocala mayor faces backlash over Confederate Memorial Day proclamation

Florida

Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn faced backlash on Tuesday after he presented a proclamation recognizing Confederate Memorial Day.

The proclamation led to a tense response from Ocala City Council President Mary Sue Rich, who said the move is making her start to believe past unfounded claims that Guinn is a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

“I am not, repeat, not in the KKK. I never have been. I never will be. And I despise and I hate everything that organization stands for,” Guinn said on Wednesday.

Guinn said he’d presented a similar proclamation several times before and had never heard any negative feedback.

The proclamation presented named April 26, 2019 as Confederate Memorial Day in Ocala.
