Markeith Loyd’s first trial set for September

A trial date has been set for the first of two murder trials for the man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police officer.

Judge Frederick Lauten set Markeith Loyd’s first trial for the death of Sade Dixon for Sept. 30.

Loyd is charged for Dixon’s murder, as well as the murder of Lt. Debra Clayton. Since Lauten is retiring, Judge Leticia Marques will preside over Loyd’s trial.

The prosecution had been pushing for a speedy trial, but the request was denied.

Lauten said he wanted to give Loyd’s new attorney ample time to prepare his case
